Why does Spine Care Need SpineDAO?

The global spine implant market was valued at $13.3 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach $20 billion by 2031 — a CAGR of 4.5%. Yet, we see slow and limited innovative approaches to spine care for over 500 million patients suffering from spine-related disorders and injuries all over the world.

The spine care industry faces critical challenges hindering advancements in patient outcomes:

  • dissemination of surgical data is fragmented;
  • surgical strategies lack consensus due to variability;
  • many non-surgical candidates occupy valuable clinical time;
  • real-time tools for patient monitoring and follow-up are insufficient; and
  • traditional funding models for spine care R&D are slow, centralized, and often exclusive.

SpineDAO is the first surgical DAO bridging the gap between research and clinical practice, ensuring faster, impactful solutions for spine care by:

  • funding spine research transparently;
  • incentivizing patient data and research sharing with $SPINE tokens;
  • curating datasets with these data for surgical predictive modeling and optimizing treatment strategies; and
  • building AI and IoT tools for surgical decision-making and real-time monitoring, respectively.

SpineDAO’s Key Focus Areas for Research and Development

Centered on leveraging advanced technology and extensive datasets to improve spinal healthcare outcomes, SpineDAO targets building solutions for critical aspects of surgical planning, decision-making, and post-operative spine care.

SpineDAO will spearhead research and development in:

  • Predictive Modeling for Surgery: Predictive algorithms that will use curated datasets of historic surgical cases to identify surgery versus non-surgical care candidates. The models will predict success, complications, and recovery. This way, the models will improve patient selection, reduce unnecessary surgeries, and guide data-backed clinical decisions.
  • AI-Driven Surgical Decisions: AI-driven decision tools to predict outcomes in spinal surgery by analyzing patient profiles and surgical techniques. This model will help surgeons choose the optimal approach, improve recovery, reduce complications, and support evidence-based planning.
  • IoT-Powered Surgical Monitoring: Real-time monitoring using wearables that track patient recovery, pain levels, and mobility post-surgery. Combining historical and wearable data will help detect complications early, offer personalized care, and improve surgical outcomes while providing valuable insights for future research and surgical practices.
  • Decentralized Publishing: Decentralised academic journal dedicated to spine research. SpineDAO will build the largest library of spine research, opening up access to spine-related knowledge and fostering collaboration across the global spine care research community.
